Most cars that pass through Mae Rim are headed somewhere else — Pai, Mae Taeng, Doi Suthep. It's become a district people drive through rather than stop in, even though it genuinely has almost everything a Chiang Mai visitor wants, all within a distance that doesn't require an early alarm.
Elephants — Choose Carefully
Mae Rim is home to several elephant care centers, ranging from sanctuaries focused on rehabilitating elephants that were previously used in heavy labor, giving them space to recover and live naturally, to centers where visitors get close, feed, and bathe elephants in a stream.

What I'd tell anyone coming here: pick a place that explicitly states no riding, no shows. These elephants have been through enough. Walking, eating bananas, and a natural bath are what they deserve — not another performance.
Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden — Thailand's Largest
Set on a mountainside in the Mae Sa Valley, spanning over 227 hectares, opened in 1992, this is Thailand's largest botanic garden. Multiple glasshouses, seasonal flower displays, and a canopy walkway suspended above the treetops with views of the surrounding hills.
Open daily 8:30am–5pm. Adult entry 100 THB, child 50 THB, plus 100 THB if you drive your own car in. Set aside at least 2–3 hours — the grounds are large enough that you can lose track of time wandering.
Mae Sa Waterfall — Ten Tiers to Choose From
Mae Sa is a multi-tiered waterfall cascading down the valley in ten stages, each with its own pool you can swim in. You don't need to hike to the very top to enjoy it — the first three or four tiers are already cool and pleasant enough for a relaxed half-day stop.
Orchid and Butterfly Farms
Several orchid farms in Mae Rim are open for walking tours and photos, some with a butterfly enclosure attached — butterflies drifting around colorful orchid blooms. Easy walking, no hiking required, which makes it a good fit for families with young kids.
Ziplines and Adventure
With its hilly terrain and dense forest, Mae Rim has become a popular base for several zipline operators — flying across valleys with a bird's-eye view. It's the kind of activity that gives a day trip a burst of adrenaline between the quieter stretches of gardens and waterfalls.
A One-Day Mae Rim Itinerary
- Morning: Start at an elephant care center (choose a welfare-focused one) — feed and bathe the elephants
- Late morning: Orchid and butterfly farm — walk and photograph
- Lunch: Find a local restaurant nearby for a proper Thai lunch
- Afternoon: Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden — glasshouses and the canopy walkway
- Evening: Mae Sa Waterfall — walk the first tiers before heading back into town
The distances between stops within Mae Rim aren't far. If you have a car or rent one, it's far more convenient than booking separate rides for each stop — and if you're already staying in Chiang Mai, Mae Rim is an easy there-and-back day trip that needs no overnight stay at all.
