The summit bog is a globally unique ecosystem harbouring carnivorous pitcher plants, rare sphagnum mosses, and dwarf rhododendrons found nowhere else in Thailand. Temperature can drop to 0°C in January.
Twin Royal Chedis at Doi Inthanon
Two magnificent adjacent chedis — Naphamethanidon and Naphaphonphumisiri — stand at 1,800 metres on Doi Inthanon, built to honour King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit on their respective 60th birthdays. The surrounding terraced gardens are landscaped with rare temperate flowers, dwarf cypress trees, and sweeping mountain views. Monk chanting can often be heard from the adjacent monastery.
Royal Project Khun Wang Research Centre
A Royal Project station at 1,400 metres on Doi Inthanon's western slopes, growing rare temperate fruits and vegetables from Japan, Europe, and Korea. November to February the gardens explode with dahlias, cosmos, chrysanthemums, and marigolds in spectacular colour. Fresh highland vegetables, strawberries, and handicrafts from surrounding Paganyaw Karen villages are sold at fair trade prices.
Chiang Mai Grand Canyon Natural Area
The natural canyon area surrounding the water park — an abandoned quarry whose dramatic 30-metre red and orange clay cliffs and walls were formed over decades of excavation. Free access to the lakeside area makes this one of the most dramatic natural photography locations near Chiang Mai, particularly at golden hour when the canyon walls glow with colour.
