Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail
A spectacular 3.5 km nature trail through montane cloud forest at 2,100 metres near the summit of Doi Inthanon. The trail is famous for its ancient Bauhinia (orchid tree) flowers that bloom pink and white from December to February, carpeting the forest floor. Excellent birdwatching with over 50 species reliably seen, including the globally threatened Green-tailed Sunbird.
Wachirathan Waterfall
The most powerful and visually dramatic waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park, Wachirathan plunges 70 metres in a single thundering drop creating a permanent double rainbow in the mist cloud. A short 300-metre paved walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform with direct views of the falls. Best after heavy rain from July to October at peak flow.
Sirithan Waterfall
A slender 150-metre cascade tucked within a forested gorge on the slopes of Doi Inthanon, accessible via a tranquil 600-metre jungle trail from the road. The waterfall splits into two graceful streams around a central rock face, creating a distinctive twin-fall effect. The shaded walking trail passes through bird-rich forest — a highlight for birdwatchers during migration season.
Mae Klang Waterfall
The most accessible major waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park, Mae Klang is a broad, powerful cascade with a large natural swimming area at the base. The falls are just 1 km from the park's main entrance, making them the perfect first stop. The surrounding area has well-maintained picnic areas, food stalls, and a visitor centre with information on the full park.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Home to Thailand's highest peak at 2,565 metres, Doi Inthanon National Park is a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve hosting cloud forests, 400+ bird species, 80+ mammal species, hill tribe villages, and six spectacular waterfalls. The summit area is perpetually cool — bring a jacket even in summer. The park's twin Royal Chedis and their terraced gardens are unmissable highlights.
Doi Inthanon Summit
Stand at the highest point in Thailand at 2,565 metres above sea level — a unique achievement on any Northern Thailand trip. A small chedi marks the summit where King Inthawichayanon's ashes are enshrined. The summit bog is a globally unique ecosystem harbouring carnivorous pitcher plants, rare sphagnum mosses, and dwarf rhododendrons found nowhere else in Thailand. Temperature can drop to 0°C in January.
Twin Royal Chedis at Doi Inthanon
Two magnificent adjacent chedis — Naphamethanidon and Naphaphonphumisiri — stand at 1,800 metres on Doi Inthanon, built to honour King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit on their respective 60th birthdays. The surrounding terraced gardens are landscaped with rare temperate flowers, dwarf cypress trees, and sweeping mountain views. Monk chanting can often be heard from the adjacent monastery.
Royal Project Khun Wang Research Centre
A Royal Project station at 1,400 metres on Doi Inthanon's western slopes, growing rare temperate fruits and vegetables from Japan, Europe, and Korea. November to February the gardens explode with dahlias, cosmos, chrysanthemums, and marigolds in spectacular colour. Fresh highland vegetables, strawberries, and handicrafts from surrounding Paganyaw Karen villages are sold at fair trade prices.
Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong
The most sacred temple in Chom Thong district, enshrining a relic of the right side of the Buddha's skull — one of only a handful in the world. The exquisite Burmese-Lanna gilded mondop (shrine hall) is a masterpiece of Northern Thai religious art, with walls covered in intricate gold leaf work and precious gem inlay. A major pilgrimage destination throughout the year.
Chiang Mai Grand Canyon Natural Area
The natural canyon area surrounding the water park — an abandoned quarry whose dramatic 30-metre red and orange clay cliffs and walls were formed over decades of excavation. Free access to the lakeside area makes this one of the most dramatic natural photography locations near Chiang Mai, particularly at golden hour when the canyon walls glow with colour.
