Located on historic Wua Lai Road, Wat Sri Suphan is the crown jewel of Chiang Mai's 200-year-old silversmith district. Globally recognized as the "Silver Temple," its central ordination hall (ubosot) is completely enveloped in hand-hammered silver, tin, and aluminum reliefs. Enshrining a 500-year-old bronze Buddha statue named Phra Chao Chet Tue, this architectural masterpiece showcases the pinnacle of Lanna craftsmanship. The temple is open daily from 06:00 to 21:00, with a 50 THB entry fee for foreign visitors.
Historical Heritage: The Silversmiths of Wua Lai
Wat Sri Suphan was originally founded in 1500 CE during the Mangrai Dynasty. However, its identity as an artisan hub began in 1805 when King Kawila repopulated the war-torn city by relocating master silversmiths and lacquerware artisans from the Salween River basin (Chiang Saen) to the southern gates of Chiang Mai, birthing the Wua Lai community.
In 2004, facing a deteriorating brick sanctuary, the local community and the abbot launched a visionary project. To prevent their ancestral metalworking skills from fading into obscurity, they clad the entire building using the traditional techniques of Repoussé and Chasing, transforming the temple into a living monument of their craft.
3 Core Architectural Masterpieces
1. Exterior Repoussé Panels

The exterior facade is layered with aluminum and pure silver sheets. Master artisans hammer the metal from the reverse side to create three-dimensional relief (repoussé) and then refine the textures from the front using chisels (chasing). The intricate panels depict Buddhist Jataka tales, the twelve zodiac signs, and the historical founding of Chiang Mai.
2. Contemporary Interior Murals

The inner sanctum is clad in solid silver panels. Intriguingly, it blends orthodox Buddhist philosophy with modern global iconography. If you look closely at the walls, you will spot world maps, spaceships, and technological symbols—a bold artistic statement suggesting that the Buddha's Dharma transcends time and encompasses the entire universe.
3. The Silversmith Workshop (Sala)
Just south of the main hall lies an active open-air workshop. Here, elderly master silversmiths can be seen hand-forging traditional alms bowls, ceremonial trays, and betel nut boxes. Visitors can observe the process up close and even try their hand at stamping a small aluminum souvenir using a mallet and chisel for just 100–200 THB.

Local Insider Tips
- Female Entry Restriction: In adherence to strict Lanna animist and Buddhist traditions, sacred amulets, relics, and protective talismans are buried beneath the foundation of the ordination hall. Women are not permitted to step inside the interior of the hall, as ancient belief holds that doing so disrupts the consecrated magic. However, female visitors are completely free to explore, admire, and photograph the magnificent exterior terraces.
- The Golden Hour for Photography: Arrive between 16:30 and 17:45. The late afternoon sun strikes the matte metal at an oblique angle, creating deep shadows that emphasize the 3D relief work without causing blown-out reflections.
